Beaver can be one of our best partners in mitigating the drying effects of climate change. Unfortunately, beaver were mostly trapped out by 1860 and are still trapped in Montana.
Beaver are key players in proper watershed function. Their dams create natural water storage of spring runoff, recharging groundwater and enhancing late summer stream flows. Downstream, water quality is improved as beaver dams act as a natural filtration system, blocking pollutants and decrease water pressure allowing sediments to drop out of the water and nutrients within the surrounding soil to enter the water, creating clean drinking water.
